With the R232 series, the SL-Class was developed entirely by Mercedes-AMG for the first time in 2022 — a return to the sporting roots of the roadster tradition. Instead of a complex retractable hardtop, the R232 reverts to a classic three-layer fabric soft top that opens or closes in around 15 seconds. On the drivetrain side, the V8 biturbo with 4.0 Liter displacement delivers either 476 PS (SL 55) or 585 PS (SL 63), both with 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive and a nine-speed Speedshift automatic transmission. The range-topping SL 63 S E Performance adds an electric motor at the rear axle for a plug-in hybrid system output of 816 PS. The roadster is manufactured exclusively at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen, the traditional home of the SL. At 4,705 mm in length and with a 2+2 seating layout, the SL positions itself as a grown grand tourer.
