Industrial Atlas

Where vehicles are made in Germany.

The German vehicle industry is spread across 51 active production locations in 13 federal states. It encompasses passenger cars, commercial vehicles, motorhomes, and motorcycles from 52 brands — from the hand-crafted sports car from Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen to the volume saloon from Ingolstadt and the motorhome from Bad Waldsee in Upper Swabia. Only plants where at least one model line undergoes final assembly in series production are listed — no pure research, design, or logistics centers.

Geographically, the industry is concentrated in the south: 25 of the 51 plants are located in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Lower Saxony follows with the Volkswagen axis WolfsburgHannoverEmden. Eastern Germany has evolved since 1990 into a platform for electric mobility — Tesla in Grünheide, VW and CUPRA in Zwickau, BMW and Porsche in Leipzig.

Federal States Compared

How the industry is distributed regionally.

Bavaria – the Automotive Federal State No. 1

With 15 locations, Bavaria is Germany's most important automotive federal state. The home plants of the BMW Group are located in Munich, Dingolfing and Regensburg, Audi's headquarters operates in Ingolstadt, MAN Truck & Bus also builds trucks and buses in Munich. Add to this motorcycle manufacturers such as Horex in Landsberg am Lech and motorhome manufacturers such as Frankia in Marktschorgast.

Baden-Württemberg – Premium and Sports Cars

10 plants, shaped by Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. Sindelfingen builds the S- and E-Class, Rastatt the compact A-Class, Mannheim Mercedes-Benz Buses. The Porsche home plant in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen has been producing in manufactory style since 1950 — the 911 has been rolling off the line here since 1963. Audi is also represented here with the Neckarsulm plant. In Aulendorf, Bad Waldsee and Isny im Allgäu lies the Upper Swabian “motorhome valley” — Carthago, Hymer, Dethleffs.

Niedersachsen – the VW axis

6 locations, all with Volkswagen DNA. Wolfsburg is the VW Group headquarters (Golf, Tiguan), Emden produces electric saloons, Hannover builds the ID. Buzz and Multivan, Osnabrück handles contract manufacturing. Complemented by specialists in Bohmte (Vario-Mobil) and Emsbüren (Robel-Reisemobile).

Saxony – Eastern Germany's Electric Hub

3 plants, all strongly focused on electric mobility. Zwickau is the first fully electrified Volkswagen plant in Europe (VW ID.3, ID.5, CUPRA Born, Audi Q4 e-tron). Leipzig produces the BMW 1 Series and 2 Series, the Mini Countryman, as well as the Porsche Macan and Macan Electric. Saxony's automotive tradition dates back to 1909 — Audi was founded in Zwickau.

West – Ford, Opel and Mercedes-Benz Trucks

10 locations in North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, and Saarland. Cologne is Ford's European headquarters (Capri, Explorer), Saarlouis Ford's second German location. Rüsselsheim is Opel's home plant. Wörth am Rhein is Mercedes-Benz Trucks' largest truck plant worldwide, Düsseldorf builds the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Motorhome specialists in Polch (Niesmann+Bischoff) and Sprendlingen (Eura Mobil) round out the picture.

East, North, and City-States – Small, Independent Clusters

7 locations with a high degree of independence. Tesla-Grünheide is Europe's first Tesla plant (Model Y), while in Ludwigsfelde Mercedes-Benz Vans builds Sprinter chassis. Mercedes-Benz manufactures the C-Class, GLC and EQE in Bremen; BMW Motorrad produces in Berlin. Fockbek in Schleswig-Holstein is Hobby's motorhome and caravan location. Methodology

What counts as a German production location.

This overview lists exclusively locations in Germany where at least one model line is final-assembled in series production. Pure research, design, or logistics centers without manufacturing are not included. Also excluded are discontinued models and plants that have relocated their production abroad. The decisive factor is current final assembly — not the headquarters of the brand and not the origin of the components. The data is based on manufacturer plant specifications, supplemented by public sources, as of 2026.
