The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis is built at the Ludwigsfelde plant and forms the technical foundation for virtually all special-purpose bodies mounted on a van: tippers, box bodies, refrigerated vehicles, ambulances, fire engines, motorhomes, and custom conversions of every kind. The chassis is powered by either the OM 651 four-cylinder diesel (2.0 l) or the OM 654 inline six-cylinder (3.0 l) with up to 190 PS – available with front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or 4MATIC all-wheel drive depending on the intended application. Permissible gross vehicle weights reach up to 5.5 t, while wheelbases ranging from 3,259 mm to 4,325 mm cover the full spectrum of body configurations. The Ludwigsfelde plant benefits from a broad supplier network for body manufacturers that has been firmly established for decades.
