The ID. California Cruise is the first fully electric California and celebrated its world premiere on 28 August 2026 at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf. Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge thus brings the Bulli camping concept into the world of electric mobility, marking the beginning of a new fully electric California family that is set to be expanded with additional models by 2028. The basis is the ID. Buzz Pro, built at the Hannover-Stöcken plant, with a 210 kW (286 PS) rear-wheel drive — available with either a short wheelbase and 79 kWh battery (up to 460 km WLTP) or a long wheelbase and 86 kWh (up to 498 km). Rather than a pop-up roof and built-in kitchen, VW opts for a reduced, flexible concept: the interior offers a sleeping solution for two people with a 2.03 m long and 1.20 m wide sleeping surface on a newly developed, nine-centimetre-thick comfort folding mattress. Ventilation grilles for the front side windows, blackout elements for all windows, two camping chairs and a camping table are included in the standard scope of delivery; the optional panoramic glass roof comes with its own blackout blind. The California Mode — developed specifically for camping — controls lighting and comfort functions via an additional control unit, provides continuous power to USB ports, and can heat or cool the interior for up to 48 hours at a stretch. Thanks to Vehicle-to-Load with 2,000 W continuous and 3.6 kW peak output, the high-voltage battery can power a hob, coffee machine, cool box or e-bike charger; the PowerSocket discharge adapter is standard equipment, as are the Interior Style Package and the Comfort Package. The California App displays charging stations along the route for the first time, and Plug & Charge initiates the charging process automatically. Externally, the Cruise is recognisable by its seat upholstery in the "Miwo" design featuring the California lettering and a dedicated "Cruise" decal. The starting price is EUR 60,761, with first deliveries scheduled for early 2027.
