ID. California Cruise: The first fully electric California comes from Hannover
Düsseldorf, August 28, 2026: At the Caravan Salon Düsseldorf, VW Nutzfahrzeuge unveiled the ID. California Cruise – the first fully electric California. It is based on the ID. Buzz, built in Hannover; deliveries are set to begin in early 2027.
At the Preview Day of the Caravan Salon 2026, the ID. California Cruise celebrated its world premiere — the first model in an electric California family that VW Nutzfahrzeuge plans to expand by 2028. The technical basis is the ID. Buzz Pro with 286 PS rear-wheel drive: with a 79-kWh battery and short wheelbase, a WLTP range of up to 460 kilometres is possible; with 86 kWh and long wheelbase, up to 498 kilometres.
The camping equipment includes a 2.03 by 1.20 meter bed with a folding mattress, a Vehicle-to-Load function with up to 2 kW of continuous output, and a "California mode" that air-conditions the interior for up to 48 hours while stationary. The Cruise forgoes a pop-up roof and kitchen — specialist media describe it as a modest beginning of the electric era for this camping classic. The starting price is €60,761, with deliveries beginning in early 2027.
The ID. Buzz has been built since 2022 at the Hannover-Stöcken plant, where the conventional California has also been produced since 2004 – in July 2026, the 250,000th unit rolled off the production line there.
