Knorr-Bremse in India

Knorr-Bremse Rail India (KBI) is a leading supplier of brake systems and power electronics for a variety of rail vehicles in India and is the market leader in the field of new technologies and quality products. The company has continuously worked on maintaining its leading position as a central point of contact for all services in the railway vehicle sector. Innovations and safety of the passengers have always been the focus of the company's philosophy at Knorr-Bremse. The company's headquarters for the rail vehicle division has been located in Faridabad, Haryana, since 1995. A new plant is being built in the vicinity of Faridabad to meet the growing demand. The plant is scheduled to commence commercial production in 2013 and allows ample scope for further expansion in the future.

The development of the pneumatic brakes industry for commercial vehicles began in India in the late 1990s. Tata Motors, India's largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles entered into a joint venture with Knorr-Bremse in the year 2002 through its group company Tata AutoComp Systems Limited. This marked the introduction of a new generation of valves, actuators, brakes, slack adjusters and electronic components on the Indian market. Knorr-Bremse Systems for Commercial Vehicles India Limited (KBI CVS) in Pune, India, became an independent subsidiary company in 2010 and was integrated into the Knorr-Bremse Group. Under the motto “Be Global, Act Local”, the company is dedicated primarily to the production of components, but also undertakes the development and adaptation of new technologies and marketing assignments for the local markets. The location of the Indian commercial division for commercial vehicles is located in Hinjewadi, Pune, in the federal state of Maharashtra.

In the coming years Knorr-Bremse intends to expand its activities in India so as to develop it into an important hub for research and development activities. At present, the company is setting up an Engineering Development Centre in Pune. The ramp up of the R&D team is already in progress and the relocation to a newoffice is planned. In the medium term, a significant number of engineers in mechanical engineering and software development is targeted.
